The simple process of showing homes to prospective buyers has changed drastically since our founding in 1965. At that time, there were no cell phones, no GPS mapping, no computers, email, or texting, and no lockboxes on the homes.
The entire process of preparing to show a home and then actually showing the home was, by today’s standards, archaic.
First, the agent had to call the listing office on a landline to confirm the home’s availability. Next, the agent was required to drive to the listing office to pick up a key for the home. In most cases, the showing agent would then drive the prospective buyer to the property. Since there was no GPS mapping, getting lost or separated was a real possibility.
It was a very time-consuming and inefficient process by today’s standards. Once the home was shown, the agent had to return the key to the listing office—missing and unavailable keys were a common problem.
It was not until the 1990s that serious improvements in technology dramatically changed and improved the process. •
