Moving With Kids and Pets

Moving can be a big transition for anyone—but especially for kids and pets who thrive on routine and familiarity.

Preparing them ahead of time can ease anxiety and make the process smoother for the whole family. Start by involving your kids early: talk about the move, visit the new neighborhood if possible, and let them help pack their own belongings. Keeping some routines consistent—like mealtimes and bedtimes—can provide a sense of stability during a chaotic time.

For pets, preparation is just as important. Gradually introduce them to moving supplies like boxes and suitcases so they don’t associate these with stress. On moving day, keep pets in a quiet, secure space or consider boarding them to avoid the confusion and foot traffic. Don’t forget to update microchip information and get new ID tags with your updated address.

Once you arrive, unpack your child’s room and your pet’s essentials first to help them feel at home. Give everyone time to adjust, and explore your new neighborhood together as a family.

Moving with kids and pets may require extra patience and planning, but with the right approach, it can be a positive and even exciting new adventure for all. •
